FOREWORD FROM THE PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN ATHLETICS
Every year around the end of June over 150 athletes take part in the European Cup Combined Events, the biggest annual combined events competition in the world. This year more than 20 men’s and 20 women’s teams plus some individual competitors will compete in the Super League, First League and Second League at three different venues across the continent.
This year the Second League for men and women again takes place in Maribor, a traditional home of athletics in Slovenia and in Europe.
The European Cup Combined Events is an important competition for the development of decathlon and heptathlon within Europe. Each year a mixture of the world’s best and young up-and-coming athletes compete for their countries in one of the few combined events competitions for national teams.
In 2004, Olympic gold and silver medallists, Carolina Klüft of Sweden and Austra Skujyte of Lithuania, battled it out in the heptathlon in the First League. And back in 1997 a young Czech called Roman Sebrle first came to attention when he beat Estonia’s Erki Nool to win the Super League.
Last year, the Latvian men won the Second League in Maribor, with Edgar Erins’ outstanding performance helping his team to promotion. The Swiss men were also promoted as were the Spanish and Latvian women. We can look forward to another exciting three-league competition in 2009.
European Athletics would like to thank the local authorities in Maribor and the Slovenian Athletics Federation (AZS) for their hard work in the preparation of the event. We look forward to a high-quality competition as the best European combined events athletes compete for individual and team honours.
Hansjörg Wirz
President, European Athletics

We are very glad about big interest for this competition. We can explane this with good organization and excellent conditions for competition what witnesses that 32 of 67 athletes achieved their personal best results.
Before the final entries we complied with the Romanian Team´s wishes to enter them as a Women and Men Team. In the Team Manual (update 7.6) is Romania considered as a Team with 3rd competitor (man and woman). As to that we can expect also some another changes which will be considered at the final draw after the conclusion of Final Entries.
